1 Chronicles - Chapter 21

In this chapter we see the name Satan, used for the first time:

"Satan rose up against Israel and caused David to take a census of the people of Israel. So David said to Joab and the commanders of the army, “Take a census of all the people of Israel—from Beersheba in the south to Dan in the north—and bring me a report so I may know how many there are.”"

Satan tempts David to break God's law and take a census of the people.  This seems like a good idea to David, but it has disastrous consequences.

Satan tries a similar approach with Jesus in Mark 1 but Jesus resists the temptations:

"The Spirit then compelled Jesus to go into the wilderness, where he was tempted by Satan for forty days. He was out among the wild animals, and angels took care of him."
