1 Samuel - Chapter 31

The Philistines fight against the Israelites and King Saul is killed.

"When the Israelites along the valley and those across the Jordan saw that the Israelite army had fled and that Saul and his sons had died, they abandoned their towns and fled."

In Zechariah 13 there is a prophecy linked to the death of a leader and the scattering of the followers in the same way that it happened with Saul:

“Awake, sword, against my shepherd,
against the man who is close to me!”
   declares the Lord Almighty.
“Strike the shepherd,
and the sheep will be scattered,
and I will turn my hand against the little ones.

In Mark 14 Jesus quotes this prophecy to his disciples just before his arrest and crucifixion:

“You will all fall away,” Jesus told them, “for it is written:

“‘I will strike the shepherd,
and the sheep will be scattered.’
