1 Samuel - Chapter 6
The Philistines have captured the ark, and had brought the presence of God into their cities. For them this was a disaster and each town that housed the ark was struck down with disease. The Philistines are therefore desperate to get rid of the ark.
Christians welcome the presence of Jesus, and look with excitement at the stories of his presence in the gospels. However, Jesus also demonstrated the consequence of being in his presence and not being one of his people. On his way into Jerusalem in Matthew 21:
"Early in the morning, as Jesus was on his way back to the city, he was hungry. Seeing a fig tree by the road, he went up to it but found nothing on it except leaves. Then he said to it, “May you never bear fruit again!” Immediately the tree withered. When the disciples saw this, they were amazed. “How did the fig tree wither so quickly?” they asked."
