2 Chronicles - Chapter 13
Abijah is now King of the Southern Kingdom of Judah; and he is facing a war with the Northern Kingdom of Israel.
Abijah faces the opposing army and says this:
"Jeroboam and all Israel, listen to me! Don’t you know that the Lord, the God of Israel, has given the kingship of Israel to David and his descendants forever by a covenant of salt? ... And now you plan to resist the kingdom of the Lord, which is in the hands of David’s descendants ... God is with us; he is our leader. His priests with their trumpets will sound the battle cry against you. People of Israel, do not fight against the Lord, the God of your ancestors, for you will not succeed.”
He rightly points out that God has promised an everlasting throne to David's descendants - a promise fulfilled in Jesus. He also tells them that they need to beware, because they are actually fighting against God.
Gamaliel gave a similar warning in Acts 5 to the Jewish leaders, when they were considering the followers of Jesus:
"Therefore, in the present case I advise you: Leave these men alone! Let them go! For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail. But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God.”
