2 Chronicles - Chapter 29
When the Temple was built, God had laid down rules on how it was to be used. These rules were not being followed:
"They also shut the doors of the portico and put out the lamps. They did not burn incense or present any burnt offerings at the sanctuary to the God of Israel. Therefore, the anger of the Lord has fallen on Judah and Jerusalem; he has made them an object of dread and horror and scorn, as you can see with your own eyes."
The lamps in the temple had been put out. These lamps were there to point to Jesus, who said of himself "I am the light of the world" (John 8). Without the hope of Jesus the people were subject to the anger of the Lord.
