2 Kings - Chapter 11
The Bible story is all about the conflict between the serpent (mentioned in Genesis 3) and the descendant of the Eve, who will restore mankind. There are repeated attempts to stop the plan by killing the descendants of the woman - Pharaoh in Exodus 1; Haman in Esther 3-5; Herod in Matthew 2.
This chapter is another of these attempts. God has said that the Messiah will come from the royal line of David. And in this chapter all of the descendants of David in that royal line are killed by Athaliah. All, that is, except one. A baby is hidden and that baby is the one remaining chance of God's promise being kept. Jehosheba is the heroine of this story, as she keeps the child hidden for six years. And at the end of the chapter we read this:
"Joash was seven years old when he began to reign."
Joash, a descendant of David and Solomon, was on the throne, and God's plan continues.
