2 Kings - Chapter 19
In this chapter God protects Jerusalem from an attack by the Assyrians, who have already conquered Israel. He does it in a miraculous way:
"That night the angel of the Lord went out to the Assyrian camp and killed 185,000 Assyrian soldiers. When the surviving Assyrians woke up the next morning, they found corpses everywhere. Then King Sennacherib of Assyria broke camp and returned to his own land. He went home to his capital of Nineveh and stayed there."
On many earlier instances there has been a reference to "The angel of the Lord", and it has been generally accepted by commentators that this is a title for the pre-incarnate Jesus. However, on this occasion none of the commentators that I have checked have suggested it. It seems that there is a reluctance to link the killing of 185,000 Assyrians with Jesus. However, it is clear from the text that the act was from God, and Jesus said that He and the Father are one; so in reality it is not feasible to disassociate Jesus from this act of God. I would, therefore, make the perhaps controversial suggestion that once again we are seeing Jesus in this chapter of 2 Kings.
