Deuteronomy - Chapter 1
Deuteronomy was the book Jewish children started their studies with; it is one of the Old Testament books most quoted in the New Testament, many times by Jesus himself. And the very name of the book leads us to Jesus. Our English name for the book comes from the Latin and the Greek and literally means "the second law". However, the Jewish title for the book comes from the opening words of the book:
elleh haddebarim (“these are the words”).
The Hebrew title was Words.
Which clearly leads us to the start of John's gospel:
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning...... The Word became flesh and made his dwelling with us.
Jesus and this book both share the same name - and I confidently expect to find Jesus throughout the book.
