Exodus - Chapter 35
We have seen the plans for the tabernacle, and also the materials. Today we consider the "master craftsmen" who are to do the work.
“The Lord has specifically chosen Bezalel son of Uri, grandson of Hur, of the tribe of Judah. The Lord has filled Bezalel with the Spirit of God, giving him great wisdom, ability, and expertise in all kinds of crafts. He is a master craftsman, expert in working with gold, silver, and bronze. He is skilled in engraving and mounting gemstones and in carving wood. He is a master at every craft. And the Lord has given both him and Oholiab son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan, the ability to teach their skills to others. The Lord has given them special skills as engravers, designers, embroiderers in blue, purple, and scarlet thread on fine linen cloth, and weavers. They excel as craftsmen and as designers."
Jesus was also a master craftsman and designer. He demonstrated this in the creation of the world. But in his time on earth he was also an artisan. We see this in Mark 6:
"Jesus left that part of the country and returned with his disciples to Nazareth, his hometown. The next Sabbath he began teaching in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed. They asked, “Where did he get all this wisdom and the power to perform such miracles?” Then they scoffed, “He’s just a carpenter."
The word translated carpenter was "tekton", which can mean more than carpenter. He was an artisan, an architect, an engineer. Like Bazalel and Oholiab he was a master craftsman.
