Genesis - Chapter 36
The chapter begins "This is the account of Esau (that is Edom)." and it ends "This was Esau the father of the Edomites".
The chapter briefly outlines the beginnings of the Edomite peoples. Esau had despised the birthright of his father, and this had passed to Jacob. Esau's descendants would be in conflict with the descendants of Jacob, and this was to be fully realised on the birth of Jacob's greatest descendant, Jesus. When Jesus was born he was from the royal line of David through both his mother Mary, and his adopted father, Joseph. At the time of his birth there was a King on the throne in Israel, who was appointed to that position by the Roman rules. That King was Herod the Great, who killed all the children under two years old, in an attempt to kill Jesus. And King Herod was, himself, an Edomite.
