Genesis - Chapter 37
We now move on to the next generation, as we read about the children of Israel - and in particular the story of Joseph. As we read about Joseph it will be easy to identify the story of Jesus, as commentators have identified over 100 ways that Joseph is a type of Jesus.
One of the links in their stories is the mention of a special coat. In Genesis 37 we see Joseph's father giving him a coat - the famous "coat of many colours".
"Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age. Also he made him a tunic of many colors." And when he is being sold into slavery by his brothers we read "it came to pass, when Joseph had come to his brothers, that they stripped Joseph of his tunic, the tunic of many colors that was on him."
Jesus' own coat is mentioned in Psalm 22, where it says "they divide My garments among them, and for My clothing they cast lots."
This part of the story is told by John in Chapter 19:
"Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His garments and made four parts, to each soldier a part, and also the tunic. Now the tunic was without seam, woven from the top in one piece. They said therefore among themselves, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be,”
