Genesis - Chapter 5
Chapter 5 of Genesis is primarily a genealogy. It is the type of chapter that many readers skip over as irrelevant for today's issues. However, everything in the bible is there for a reason. And that reason is always Jesus.
These verses point to Jesus in a very strange way. We have a list of Adam's descendants, from Adam to Noah, and their names are transliterations of their Hebrew names. It is important to bear in mind that Hebrew names have meanings. Indeed, in many places the name's meaning is stated in the Bible passage where the person is introduced. Or at least it's meaning is hinted at. Fir example in verse 29 it says that Lamech named his son Noah and said "he will comfort us in the labour and painful toil or our hands caused by the ground the Lord has cursed." As indicated here, Noah means "shall bring comfort or rest."
We have in this chapter Adam, Seth, Enosh, Kenan, Mahalalel, Jared, Enoch, Methuselah, Lamech and Noah.
Adam means Man; Noah means shall bring comfort or rest. The other names all have meanings, some of which are universally accepted; and some have some disputes over their meanings. There are, however, some explanations of the meanings of the names which, when taken together, give a clear prophecy. A prophecy put together over hundreds of years as 9 parents named their sons.
Adam - Man
Seth - Appointed
Enosh - Mortal or frail
Kenan - sorrow
Mahalalel - the blessed Lord
Jared - descended/came down
Enoch - teaching
Methuselah - death shall bring
Lamech - despairing
Noah - comfort or rest.
The story of these 10 men is in fact the story of Jesus - Man (is) appointed mortal sorrow, (but) the blessed God descended, teaching his death shall bring (the) despairing comfort.
