Joshua - Chapter 1
We have finished the book of Moses, and the leadership of God's chosen people now passes from Moses to Joshua. The most obvious link to Jesus is in the name of the book.
Yeshua is the Hebrew name for Jesus. It means Yahweh [the Lord] is Salvation. Joshua is the English spelling of Yeshua. And when the New Testament was written in Greek the Greek form of Yeshua was used - Iēsous. The English spelling of the name Iēsous is “Jesus.” Jesus and Joshua are different ways of recording the same name.
And right at the start of the book of Joshua the importance of God's word is emphasised:
"This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success."
Joshua's success as a leader will depend on him reading, meditating on, and obeying the word of God. This is a link to John Chapter 1 where we see Jesus given the name "the Word".
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God."
