Leviticus - Chapter 10
In the previous chapter fire came out from the presence of the Lord and consumed the offering - and all the people shouted for joy.
In this chapter Nadab and Abihu, two of Aaron's sons, did not follow God's instructions. They put fire in their ceremonial vessels and added incense to burn for God. But their perfume was not acceptable, and again fire came out from the presence of the Lord - this time consuming them, and they died before the Lord.
This contrast is set out by Paul in his second letter to the Corinthians (Chapter 2):
"Now [God] uses us to spread the knowledge of Christ everywhere, like a sweet perfume. Our lives are a Christ-like fragrance rising up to God. But this fragrance is perceived differently by those who are being saved and by those who are perishing. To those who are perishing, we are a dreadful smell of death and doom. But to those who are being saved, we are a life-giving perfume."
