Numbers - Chapter 13

In this chapter we see 12 leaders - one from each tribe - going into Canaan to see the land that God is leading them into.  The names of the leaders are listed, and from the tribe of Judah (Jesus' tribe) there is Caleb, who is one of the two leaders who want to enter the land.  And from the tribe of Ephraim there is Hoshea son of Nun; the second of the two leaders who will trust God.  And in verse 16 we see a name change:

Moses gave Hoshea son on Nun the name Joshua.

This name means the Lord is salvation, and Joshua will play a key role in demonstrating the salvation of the Lord as he leads the people into the promised land many years later.

We see the same name introduced in the book of Matthew when an angel announces to Joseph that Mary is going to give birth to a son:

"You are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."

We often miss the connection because our bibles use the Greek version of the name - Jesus.  Using the Hebrew version the angel is saying "you are to give him the name Joshua ..."
